terms

A few rules for sharing the shelf.

These Terms explain the rules for using Bukshelf, including your account, community features, the content you share, and what you can expect from us.

Last updated: September 21, 2026

Welcome to Bukshelf.

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Bukshelf mobile app, website, and related services ("Bukshelf," the "Service," "we," "us," or "our").

Bukshelf is currently operated by Ivana Navarrete Santeliz.

By creating an account, accessing Bukshelf, or using the Service, you agree to these Terms.

If you do not agree to them, please do not use Bukshelf.

For questions about these Terms, contact: support@bukshelf.com

01

Who can use Bukshelf

You must be at least 18 years old to create or maintain a Bukshelf account.

We may ask for your date of birth to confirm eligibility.

If the information associated with an account indicates that the account holder is under 18, access to Bukshelf may be restricted. Restricted users may still be given access to options such as signing out, contacting support, or deleting their account.

You must provide accurate information when creating and maintaining your account.

02

Your account

You are responsible for activity that occurs through your account and for keeping your login credentials secure.

You may sign in using email and password or, where available, Google Sign-In.

You must not:

  • create an account using another person's identity without permission;
  • impersonate another person or organization;
  • sell, transfer, or improperly share access to your account;
  • attempt to access another user's account;
  • interfere with authentication or account-security measures; or
  • use Bukshelf in a way intended to bypass access restrictions.

If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us at support@bukshelf.com.

03

Your books and reading information

Bukshelf lets you record and organize information about your reading, including books, shelves, ratings, reviews, notes, reading progress, challenges, and other reading activity.

You retain ownership of the original content you create.

Book covers, titles, descriptions, author information, and other book metadata may come from third-party sources such as Google Books and remain subject to the rights of their respective owners.

04

Community features and User Content

Bukshelf includes social and shared features such as profiles, reviews, Feed activity, comments, reactions, Reading Rooms, Buddy Reads, and messages.

Anything you submit that can be seen or accessed by other users is referred to in these Terms as User Content.

You are responsible for the User Content you post or share.

You must have the necessary rights to submit that content.

Depending on the feature and your privacy settings, User Content may be visible publicly, to friends, to specific participants, or to another limited audience.

05

License you give Bukshelf

You keep ownership of your User Content.

By submitting User Content to Bukshelf, you give us a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, process, display, transmit, and otherwise use that content only as reasonably necessary to operate, provide, secure, moderate, and improve Bukshelf.

This license does not give Bukshelf ownership of your content.

It ends when the content is deleted from Bukshelf, except where:

  • copies remain temporarily in technical backups;
  • the content must be retained for legal or security reasons; or
  • shared content is anonymized or retained to preserve a conversation or shared reading experience, as described in our Privacy Policy.

06

Community rules

Bukshelf is meant to be a welcoming reading community.

You may not use Bukshelf to create, upload, post, send, promote, or distribute content or behavior that:

  • is illegal or promotes illegal activity;
  • threatens, harasses, bullies, stalks, or targets another person;
  • promotes hatred or violence against people based on protected characteristics;
  • sexually exploits or abuses any person;
  • involves sexual content relating to minors;
  • promotes child exploitation or abuse;
  • contains non-consensual intimate or sexual material;
  • encourages suicide, self-harm, or serious physical harm in a way that violates applicable platform rules or law;
  • contains credible threats of violence;
  • promotes terrorism or violent extremist activity;
  • is fraudulent, deceptive, or intended to scam other users;
  • contains malicious software, harmful code, or attempts to compromise Bukshelf or another user's device or account;
  • shares another person's sensitive or private information without permission;
  • repeatedly sends spam, unwanted promotions, or abusive messages;
  • infringes copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or other rights;
  • impersonates another person or misrepresents an affiliation;
  • attempts to manipulate, disrupt, scrape, reverse engineer, or interfere with Bukshelf; or
  • otherwise violates these Terms or applicable law.

Context matters. Discussion of difficult themes in books is not automatically prohibited simply because the subject itself is sensitive.

We may moderate User Content and take reasonable action where necessary to enforce these rules.

07

Reporting and moderation

If you encounter content or behavior that violates these Terms, you may use the reporting tools provided in Bukshelf or contact support@bukshelf.com.

Where appropriate, Bukshelf may:

  • remove or restrict content;
  • limit its visibility;
  • warn a user;
  • restrict certain features;
  • suspend an account;
  • terminate an account; or
  • take other reasonable action.

We may also act when required by law or necessary to protect users, Bukshelf, or third parties.

We do not guarantee that every report will result in removal or enforcement.

08

Intellectual property

Bukshelf itself, including its branding, software, interface, original illustrations, design, graphics, logos, and original written content, is owned by or licensed to Bukshelf and is protected by applicable intellectual-property laws.

These Terms do not grant you ownership of Bukshelf's intellectual property.

You may not copy, distribute, sell, sublicense, reverse engineer, or commercially exploit Bukshelf or its original materials except as permitted by law or with our written permission.

10

Third-party services and content

Bukshelf relies on third-party services for some functionality.

These currently include services such as:

  • Google Firebase;
  • Google Sign-In;
  • Google Books;
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging;
  • Cloudflare;
  • Upstash; and
  • Resend.

Third-party services may have their own terms and privacy policies.

Bukshelf is not responsible for third-party services outside our control.

Book information provided through Google Books is subject to Google's terms and applicable rights.

11

Feedback and ideas

We love hearing ideas from readers.

If you send us suggestions, feature ideas, feedback, or other proposals, you agree that we may consider and use them without an obligation to compensate you.

This does not transfer ownership of any separate copyrighted material you submit.

12

Service availability

Bukshelf is currently offered free of charge.

We may add, remove, modify, test, or discontinue features over time.

We may also temporarily interrupt the Service for maintenance, security, technical problems, or circumstances outside our control.

We do not promise that every feature will always be available or that Bukshelf will always operate without interruption or errors.

If paid services are introduced in the future, additional terms will be provided before you are charged.

13

Changes to your account or the Service

We may make changes that affect how Bukshelf works, including changes required for:

  • security;
  • legal compliance;
  • technical maintenance;
  • abuse prevention;
  • platform requirements; or
  • product development.

Where reasonably appropriate, we will provide notice of material changes.

14

Suspension and termination

You may stop using Bukshelf at any time.

You may also permanently delete your account through the app or the web account-deletion process.

We may restrict, suspend, or terminate access if we reasonably believe that:

  • you materially violated these Terms;
  • your activity creates a security or legal risk;
  • your account is being used fraudulently or abusively;
  • continued access could harm other users or Bukshelf; or
  • we are legally required to do so.

Where appropriate, we may give notice or an opportunity to correct the issue, but serious violations may require immediate action.

15

What happens when your account is deleted

Account deletion removes personal account data as described in our Privacy Policy.

Some shared material may be anonymized instead of removed when deletion would otherwise damage a shared conversation or Buddy Read.

For example, a retained shared message may appear under the name:

Deleted reader

If a deleted user owns a Buddy Read that still has active participants, ownership may be transferred so the shared room can continue.

Please see our Privacy Policy and Account Deletion page for more detail.

16

Privacy

Your use of Bukshelf is also governed by our Privacy Policy.

The Privacy Policy explains the personal information we process, why we process it, the service providers involved, your privacy choices, and account deletion.

17

Disclaimer

Bukshelf is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis to the extent permitted by applicable law.

We aim to provide a reliable and enjoyable service, but we cannot guarantee that:

  • Bukshelf will always be uninterrupted or error-free;
  • all book information supplied by third parties will be accurate or complete;
  • all user-generated content will be accurate, appropriate, or available;
  • every feature will remain available permanently; or
  • every technical issue can be prevented.

Book reviews, recommendations, ratings, comments, and similar content are opinions or contributions from users and should not be treated as professional advice.

Nothing in these Terms excludes warranties or rights that cannot legally be excluded.

18

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Bukshelf and its operator will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or similar losses arising from use of or inability to use the Service.

This may include loss resulting from:

  • third-party services;
  • service interruptions;
  • loss of access;
  • reliance on user-generated content; or
  • unauthorized conduct by another user.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability where doing so would be prohibited by law, including liability that cannot legally be excluded under applicable consumer-protection law.

19

Your responsibility for violations

You are responsible for your own use of Bukshelf and for content you submit.

Where permitted by applicable law, you may be responsible for losses or claims caused by your unlawful use of the Service, infringement of another person's rights, or material violation of these Terms.

This section does not limit any consumer rights that cannot legally be waived.

20

Changes to these Terms

Bukshelf will evolve, and these Terms may change over time.

When we make material changes, we will update the Last updated date and, where appropriate, provide notice through the app or website.

If a material change requires renewed acceptance, we may ask you to agree to the updated Terms before continuing to use relevant Bukshelf features.

21

Applicable law and consumer rights

These Terms do not remove or reduce mandatory consumer rights that apply to you under the laws of the country where you live.

Different laws may apply depending on your location and the circumstances of your use of Bukshelf.

Nothing in these Terms is intended to require you to waive legal protections that cannot lawfully be waived.

22

General terms

If one provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue to apply to the extent permitted by law.

A failure by Bukshelf to enforce a provision immediately does not mean we permanently waive the right to enforce it.

These Terms, together with any policies expressly incorporated into them, govern your use of the Service.
